Menopause is an exciting time of change, of transformation and healing, and affects not only our bodies but also our minds and spirits at the deepest level.
There is much more to this midlife transformation than hormonal change, skipping periods, and hot flashes. Our nervous systems are being rewired and our brains are changing, and with that our ability to focus, our thoughts, and our intuition. Up until midlife a woman’s hormones tends to keep her focused on the needs and feelings of others, being a true nurturer. Once the hormones controlling this caretaker behaviour decline, there is opportunity for “liberation”, and a woman finds herself at a cross-roads of following old behaviour patterns, exploring her own creative passions, or juggling a combination of the two.
Christine Northrup’s book, “The Wisdom of Menopause”, tells of a 1998 American survey which showed that more than half of women between the ages of 50 and 65 were happier at this time of their lives than they were in their twenties, thirties and forties. They felt their lives had improved in many ways, including their family life, interests, relationships, and friendships. Contrary to common perception, menopause was not the “beginning of the end”, but a time of rebirth, of self-discovery.
Yet while we have this liberation to look forward to, the transformation process can be tumultuous, where we can be subject to mood swings, hot flashes, weight gain, changes in libido, incontinence, brain fog, depression, and much more. Verve Women’s Wellness aims to empower women to navigate a path through these challenges, to understand how they can get the upper hand through nutrition and exercise, to make the path less rocky, and to optimise their post-menopausal health.
